On the anniversary of its USC premiere years ago, I’m thrilled to see Fig listed among the Most Popular Short Films on the streaming service Kanopy. One of my proudest writing projects from my USC MFA days, directed by the one and only Ryan Coogler, Fig is a sympathetic look at a young mother named Candace—forced into prostitution to care for her daughter Kyla—and how their lives change in an instant due to an unfortunate choice. It’s a raw, powerful, moving story that has continued to resonate with audiences since its release at USC and its subsequent festival run.
After winning the HBO Short Film Competition at ABFF (the American Black Film Festival), Fig aired on HBO programming for more than two years before finding its final home on Kanopy. Notably, the film also won the DGA Student Film Award and was nominated for Outstanding Independent Short Film at the Black Reel Awards, among other accolades.
If you haven’t seen it, check it out! It still means the world to me. 👉 https://www.kanopy.com/product/fig
